Aurora offers one position per year into the integrated IR residency program. It is a six year categorical program that requires completion of a transitional year at Aurora Health, followed by three years of primarily diagnostic radiology training and ending with two years of focused interventional radiology training. After completing residency, graduates are eligible for the IR/DR certificate from the American Board of Radiology.
The goal of our residency is to prepare our graduates with a solid diagnostic foundation through our Diagnostic Radiology Residency curriculum and with comprehensive Interventional Radiology training with hands on experience in a large breadth of interventional radiology procedures, vascular imaging, and clinical experience. Our graduates will be poised to succeed whether their goal is academic, hospital based, or private practice radiology.
Curriculum
The PGY-1 Transitional Year Residency at Aurora is based at St. Luke’s Medical Center and includes rotations in internal medicine inpatient wards, outpatient clinic, and emergency medicine. Additionally, an inpatient medical rotation at Aurora Sinai Medical Center and multiple elective blocks are scheduled.
During the PGY-2 through PGY-4 years, trainees will rotate through diagnostic rotations in body, thoracic, neuro, ultrasound, musculoskeletal, mammography, nuclear medicine, and cardiovascular imaging as well as fluoroscopic procedures and interventional radiology rotations. Pediatric rotations will be spent at Children’s Wisconsin. Diagnostic call is taken on a night float system.
The last two years are spent primarily in interventional radiology, including pediatric interventional radiology at Children’s Wisconsin. Additional rotations in ICU, nuclear medicine, and mammography are also scheduled. Interventional call is pager call, one night/week and one weekend/month.

Training Sites
Residents will primarily spend their time at St. Luke’s Medical Center, 15 minutes from the heart of downtown Milwaukee. Residents will also have the opportunity to rotate multiple times through Children’s Wisconsin (for diagnostic and interventional pediatric rotations), and to experience cases at the following Aurora sites: Sinai Medical Center, Grafton, Summit, Mount Pleasant, Kenosha, Burlington, West Allis, Hartford, and South Shore.
