What is obstetrics and gynecology?

OB-GYNs, or obstetrician/gynecologists, are doctors who specialize in care for women’s reproductive health, including pregnancy and childbirth. OB-GYNs receive advanced training in:

• Obstetrics: Pregnancy care, including preconception, pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum (after delivery)
• Gynecology: Care for a woman’s reproductive system from adolescence through postmenopause

Obstetrics: Specialized care for pregnancy and childbirth

From preconception planning and prenatal care to childbirth and delivery, our OB-GYNs guide you every step of the way. These doctors are part of a care team that also includes advanced practice registered nurses and certified nurse-midwives.

Gynecology: Complete care for women’s reproductive health

Our OB-GYNs help you stay healthy at every age and life stage with preventive care, education and advanced treatments when you need them. Specially trained nurse practitioners and physician assistants round out our care teams and provide gynecologic exams and preventive care.

Our services include:

• Birth control (contraceptives) and family planning
• In-office procedures, including colposcopy
• Menopause and perimenopause management
• Preventive care and screenings, including Pap smears and pelvic exams
• Therapies for pelvic floor disorders and incontinence
• Treatment for uterine fibroids and all types of pelvic infections
• Referrals, as needed, to Aurora specialists for gynecologic cancer treatment, pelvic floor rehabilitation and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery

When should you start seeing an OB-GYN?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends scheduling your first gynecologist appointment between the ages of 13 and 15. It’s important to continue with yearly Pap smear and gynecological exams, as these visits are the best way to protect your health.
